I was born and raised in Sebastopol, Pontypool. My Mum, aged eleven, had been sent to Usk in the service of an old lady, so grew up unable to read or write. Her treatment meant that she remained feeling subservient all her life. This was passed on and it took a long time for me to fathom and overcome it.
